If you've seen the movie "Blue Velvet"

I watched it recently after much encouragement and hype from other people and I'm confused: why is it considered such a great movie? I thought it was awful and boring. I have strange in violent taste in movies sometimes, if the movie is good enough to make up for it; I loved Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Requiem for a Dream, After Hours, even Eraserhead, another David Lynch movie, so that isn't what I dislike it. I just couldn't see why people make such a big deal about it. Is it because it was revolutionary for the time, with all the violence and dark side of american culture stuff? Is there another reason? I'm entitled to my own opinion, of course, and I won't try to like a movie because other people think it's good, but can someone tell me why it's considered so great in film circles? Thanks.
